Adele Included Voice Notes Explaining Her Divorce To Her Son In A New Song On “30”
Adele in a series of conversations where she opened up to her Son about her decision to divorce Simon Konecki made it onto her upcoming album.
The first reviews for 30 were published on Tuesday, with critics hailing the album as Adele’s best work yet.
But one song in particular stuck out from the rest — an R&B ballad titled “My Little Love,” on which Adele speaks directly to her son, Angelo, and includes snippets of the voice notes she recorded at the suggestion of her therapist to help discuss the divorce.
According to a review by Stereogum, Adele tells Angelo in one voice note, “I wanted you to have everything I never had,” before saying: “I’m so sorry if what I’ve done makes you feel sad.”
Another voice note then says: “I love your dad because he gave you to me.”
Other moments apparently include the 33-year-old sobbing as she “[describes] her newfound anxiety and loneliness” during a hangover.
Explaining that she’d been inspired to use them in the song by the likes of Tyler, the Creator, and Skepta, she said: “I thought it might be a nice touch, seeing as everyone’s been at my door for the last 10 years, as a fan, to be like, Would you like to come in?‘”
“I was just going through the motions and I wasn’t happy,” she said. “Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me.”
She went on: “If I can reach the reason why I left, which was the pursuit of my own happiness, even though it made Angelo really unhappy — if I can find that happiness and he sees me in that happiness, then maybe I’ll be able to forgive myself for it.”
“I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness,” she told the outlet in an interview last month. “It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.”
