It was reported that the continuing incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, may affect the elections that will take place in Nigeria in 2023.

It is important to keep in mind that Kanu has been held captive ever since he was extradited from Kenya in June of 2021.

However, an Appeal Court in Abuja released and acquitted the leader of the IPOB of the terrorism charges just the week before last.

Despite the judgment, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had given the impression that the head of IPOB would continue to be held in detention.

Malami clarified that Kanu was simply dismissed and not acquitted, saying that further charges would be made against the IPOB leader.

Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary- General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed concern over his continued detention and lamented that young people in the Southeast may revolt against the conduct of elections in 2023 in the Southeast.

Isiguzoro, in an interview with DAILY POST, pleaded with the Federal Government to grant Kanu a pardon to appease the concerns of the people living in the Southeast.

He assured President Buhari that Igbos elders in the Southeast are prepared to have a dialogue with the Federal Government and make sure Kanu and IPOB members put a stop to the Biafra movement.
