STRIKE: ASUU Finally Reacts To FG’s Directives To Vice Chancellors To Reopen Varsities, Resume Lectures

The Academic Staff Union of Institutions (ASUU) has responded to the instruction issued by the Federal Government to vice- chancellors to reopen the universities so that students will resume lectures.

According to Naija Politics, the order was issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in a letter that was approved by Professor Abubakar Rasheed, who serves as the Executive Secretary of the commission on Monday.

However, in a letter that was sent out and signed by Sam Onazi, the Director of Finance and Accounts for the NUC, the Commission instructed the Vice Chancellors to get the lecturers back in the classroom as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, in a conversation with the Daily Sun, Adelaja Odukoya, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU in Lagos State, responded to the directive by the Federal Government by saying that the move of the Federal Government is to sack lectures.

Odukoya lamented that President Buhari and the praise singers he employs would come to institutions to give lectures.

He went on to say that students will be able to witness the federal government’ s failure when they return to their respective campuses and find that their lecturers are too weak to lecture them due to hunger.

Odukoya claimed that the government may recruit lecturers from Ghana with better salaries because a professor in Ghana makes approximately 13, 000 cedis per month, which is equivalent to roughly N1. 5 million, whereas a lecturer in Nigeria is anticipated to be paid N460, 000 per month.
